Brown Marine Service, Inc. was incorporated by Capt. Shirley Brown in 1958 as a tugboat and barge company. Over the years it branched out into marina and boatyard services, yacht sales and brokerage, and truck & diesel engine repair and parts. In the 1990's Brown Marine and several other affiliated companies were organized under a familoy holding company. After the death of Capt. Brown in 2005 the family decided to reorganize the business and sell off all but the Marina & Boatyard and retain some of the investment real estate. Brown Marine Service, Inc. was dissolved but the Marine and Industrial Supply division was rolled into the Marina boat yard division and reincorporated into the present Audusson Marina, LLC using the name of Pelican Perch Marina & Boatyard and Brown Marine Suppy. The Brown Family also owns various pieces of prime waterfront real estate suitable for development in Pensacola, Florida and in Orange Beach, Alabama. |

Founder of Brown Marine Born 1913 Died 2005 |
Shirley J. Brown, founder of Brown Marine Service, Inc. died August 9, 2005 at the age of 91. He shared with everyone a wealth of knowledge concerning ships, boats and the brave mariners who sail the water-ways of the southeast. Captain Brown's family tree reflects the rich diversity of this great nation. One of his ancestors sailed with the legendary privateer, Jean Lafitte; still another was a chief in the Creek Indian nation. The most noticeable thread binding Shirley Brown's family is the sea. Captain Brown loved to tell this story: "I was just a 1-year old when I went aboard my first boat. I fell off the family dock and landed in a small boat tied-up there. I've been aboard boats ever since." Brown's grandfather was a ship captain, his father a harbor pilot and boat captain. His son Ted is also a captain and is president of Brown Marine. Grandsons Gary and Steve Bryan are both tug captains. He was equally at home in the wheelhouse or his office. "I believe I have discovered the fountain of youth," he liked to brag while pointing out his marina window in the direction of Pensacola Bay. "It's salt water!" |
