Gulf Breeze Historical Society Meeting October 1999 Robin Rowan talks about Pensacola's Maritime History

Robin Rowan

Robin cut her career teeth not as a writer, but as a disc jockey while majoring in speech at the University of Wisconsin. Soon after, she landed her first writing job at a Chicago-based incentives company. She was to inspire client salespeople to win fabulous trips to exotic destinations such as Rio de Janiero, the Swiss Alps, and Cozumel, Mexico.

But the urge to play d.j. was still stronger than the one to write, and in 1982 Robin headed to Pensacola, sight unseen, where she'd been hired as an all-night country d.j. Two ad agencies followed, and since 1988, she as spent her time as both a writer and a voice talent for commercials.

Travel and tourism writing is her specialty, with an emphasis on Northwest Florida, her favorite place on the planet. In addition to the first and second editions of The Insiders' Guide to FLorida's Great Northwest, her credits include three Frommer's travel guides, state vacation guides for Florida and Alabama, travel videos for eight Southeastern markets, and articles for magazines as far-reaching as Modern Bride, Country Home, Birmingham and Florida Trend. She spent two years writing travel and tourism-related pieces as a stringer for both Destination Florida, and online travel magazine, and The Business Register, a quarterly magazine covering the northern Gulf Coast. She lends her voice to radio and TV commercials, including the beginning narration at the IMAX theater and a syndicated home improvement show. She appears regularly on BLAB-TV on the "Wake Up With Lois & Mike Show," doing her own travel segment called "Ramblin' with Robin Rowan."

Robin occasionally speaks to school and community groups, serves as an on-call guide for a tour operator in Pensacola, leads a Girl Scout troop and is currently serving her 4th year as a member of Pine Forest High School's Travel and Tourism Advisory Council.
